YOGA FOR MENTAL HEALTH

Unification of Body, Breath, and Mind!

The practice of yoga is aimed at promoting one's spiritual, physical, and mental well-being, leading to a grounded lifestyle. Its name is derived from the Sanskrit word "Yuj," meaning the unification of the body, mind, and spirit. While it is not a religious practice, yoga has spiritual roots, and it has been a worldwide practice since the sage Patanjali documented it in the Yoga Sutras around 400 C.E. Its ultimate goal is to attain freedom from pain and balance ego-driven ideas and actions by uniting the physical, mental, and spiritual selves.

Although yoga is for everyone, it requires mindfulness and attentiveness to one's body, and regular practice is necessary before experiencing its benefits. Especially after the COVID-19 lockdown, many individuals, including students, parents, employees, and elders, are experiencing heightened stress. Practicing yoga can help treat several physical and mental health problems, including diabetes, heart disease, anxiety, depression, and many more. Children and teenagers can benefit from practicing yoga as it allows them to grow in self-awareness and confidence.

As part of the mental health initiative #KnowYourBrain at Ramagya School, students and employees are encouraged to practice basic yoga stretches daily. Certified yoga instructor Ms Vatsala Tyaagi conducts morning wing assemblies at the school, where students practice yoga asanas, deep breathing, mindfulness, and coordination exercises for the right and left brain. These practices aim to help students take a break from their stressful schedules and competitive environments, focus on their bodies and sensations, and synchronize their minds and bodies.

This initiative is a practical approach to the program of Know Your Brain at Ramagya School. To learn more about the mental health initiatives of Ramagya, follow their social media pages on Instagram (@ramagya.school) and Facebook (Ramagya School).
